“Arangetram” literally means “ascending the stage”. The Arangetram is the debut performance of a dancer. It is the moment when a dancer conveys her understanding of the art-form to her guru and to the Lord of dance, Lord Nataraja.
At the Academy of Indian Dances, a dancer’s Arangetram is a solemn occasion. It is an occasion that each dancer takes seriously, as performing an Arangetram under the banner of the Academy is understood to be an honour and a responsibility. It is a testimonial to the faith Guru Mythili Raghavan has in the dancer’s ability and dedication.
The Arangetram is a moment of transition in each dancer’s life, signifying an acceptance of dance as a passion, and understanding the commitment that classical dance involves. Since 1991, Guru Mythili Raghavan has trained several dancers to this point in their lives, the point when the dancer attempts to demonstrate her technique, expression and skill.
